The Experience

Your hotel pickup starts at 8 a.m., and the first stop is Chaukhandi tombs, an Islamic graveyard holding around 1,500 tombs from the 15th to 18th centuries. The ones still standing are built from yellow sandstone slabs carved with details that tell you who lies beneath: male tombs show horsemen, weapons and hunting scenes, while female tombs display jewelry and necklaces. About 500 to 600 remain intact enough to walk among and study up close. The site sits on UNESCO's tentative list and opens to the public without crowds.

After roughly an hour and a half on the road, you arrive at Bhambore, the ruins of a port city founded in the late 4th millennium BC and destroyed around 1250 CE. It once sat on the ancient trade route to China and the Middle East, and the museum on site walks you through that history with entrance included. Lunch follows at a Pakistani restaurant, then the drive continues to Makli, another hour away. Makli is one of the world's largest necropolises, covering about 8 kilometers in diameter and holding half a million graves and monuments. Kings, queens, governors, saints and scholars are buried here in brick or stone structures, many decorated with glazed tiles. You'll visit the Shah Jahan Mosque, a Mughal-era building known for its geometric brickwork and tilework: rare decorative elements in mosques of that period. The day ends with tea at Keenjhar Lake, Pakistan's second-largest freshwater lake, before the return to Karachi.

The tour includes a free photo session throughout the day. An English-speaking guide travels with you in an air-conditioned vehicle, and all entrance fees, taxes and the Pakistani meal are covered in the price.
