The Experience
Karachi's colonial architecture tells the story of the city before and after partition. The tour starts at Mohatta Palace, built in 1927 as a summer home for a Hindu businessman in the seaside Clifton area and now preserved as a museum. From there you move to Frere Hall, an 1865 colonial building named after a British official who developed Sindh's economy. Inside, the Sadequain Gallery displays the work of Pakistan's most celebrated artist, including his unfinished ceiling mural that stopped mid-creation when he died. The third museum stop is Flag Staff House, built in 1936 and now housing the personal collection of Mohammad Ali Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan: his cars, belongings and the spaces where he lived are on display.
The market portion of the tour takes you into Zainab Market in old Karachi's heart, where small shops sell artifacts, antiques, clothing and leather goods. This is where you pick up souvenirs and get a sense of the city's everyday commerce. Private transportation moves you between all four stops, and your guide, speaking English throughout, provides context for each site. The tour runs five to seven hours, which leaves room for a meal or rest before or after if your afternoon allows it.
