The Experience

You've just landed in Tromsø, or maybe you're on your second morning and the light is still strange. Either way, you meet the guides at Prostneset bus terminal and climb onto a bus for a 25-minute drive along the coast — the water is dark, the mountains are white, and you're already thinking about what comes next. The reindeer camp sits outside the city, and when you arrive, the animals are waiting. There are 300 of them, and they know what's coming.

The reindeer sledding part is short — 10 to 15 minutes — but it's the thing you came for. You're moving through the valley and along the coast behind a sled pulled by reindeer, which is not something that happens often in life. Your guide talks about Sami history and culture while you sit around the fire, and at some point they perform joik — a traditional Sami folk song that sounds nothing like what you expected.
