The experience

You arrive at Prostneset bus terminal in central Tromsø, where your guide meets you before a 25-minute drive along the coast to the Sami camp. The reindeer and the rest of the team are waiting. From there, the sleigh ride takes you around the valley and back toward the water: 30 minutes pulled by the animals themselves, moving at their pace through the landscape. Afterward, you step out to feed the herd of 300 reindeer at close range, a moment most people remember more than the ride.

Inside the gamme, a traditional Sami tent, the guide has prepared a hot meal cooked over the fire. You eat while seated around the flames, and the guide shares stories about Sami culture and history. Before you leave, the guide performs joiking (a traditional folk song unique to the Sami people), sung live. The experience closes with the drive back to the city center, dropping you at the same terminal where the day began.

Bring at least two layers of warm clothing, gloves, a hat, and winter boots. The coast of Tromsø in winter is cold and exposed. The tour runs about four hours total.
