The Experience

Someone’s handing me a steaming cup—herbal tea, I think, though my fingers are too numb to care. Our Sámi guide, Anders, is poking at the campfire, sparks flying up into the dark like tiny auroras of their own. We’d left Tromsø hours ago, headlights carving through snowdrifts and valleys that seemed to go on forever. I didn’t expect to cross a border just to see the northern lights, but here we were, passports in our pockets just in case.

The air out here is so sharp it almost stings your nose. Everyone’s bundled up in thermal suits (they handed those out before we left), but my toes still feel like ice cubes. There’s this silence you only get far from city lights—except for someone quietly laughing when I try to say “guovža” (aurora) in Sámi. The sausage grilling over the fire smells smoky and rich; honestly, it tastes better than most restaurant meals I’ve had lately. We’re all just staring up at the sky, waiting. It’s not tense exactly—more like holding your breath with strangers who suddenly don’t feel so strange.

When the first streak of green finally ripples across the sky, nobody says anything at first.
