Step-by-step itinerary

Chase the Northern Lights at night

  • Meet at Prostneset bus terminal
  • Board bus with driver and guide
  • Travel to best aurora viewing spot
  • Receive camera tips from guide
  • Photograph the Northern Lights
  • Guide takes souvenir photos

The experience

The tour runs six to seven hours, starting from Prostneset building near the bus terminal. A professional driver and experienced northern lights guide work together to track the weather and position the bus where aurora activity is most likely at that moment. The guide provides camera tips before the lights show, so when the aurora breaks through, you're ready to frame the shot. If the northern lights don't appear, the night is still spent chasing them across the sky. The operator makes clear that sightings cannot be guaranteed since this is a natural phenomenon.

You travel in either a full-size bus or a minibus depending on group size, with hot chocolate, tea, coffee and snacks provided throughout the night. Reflective vests are supplied for safety at the stops. The guide takes photographs during the excursion as a souvenir. Those images are uploaded to a third-party platform afterward so you have a record of the night. If you prefer not to be photographed, let the guide know at the start. The tour operates in English or Spanish, and the exact departure time shifts with the season as daylight hours change. Check your voucher for the precise meeting time.

Surfaces can be slippery where the bus stops, so dress warmly and wear sturdy footwear. If you're traveling with children, provide their ages when booking so the correct child seat can be arranged. The driver will not allow boarding without this information. Tripods and thermal suits are available to rent separately at the operator's office on Storgata 77 if you want to bring your own gear. Travel insurance is recommended to cover any incidents during the tour.

Is this one for you?Choose the English departure if you speak English, or the Spanish option if Spanish is your language. Both tours follow the same route and timing, scouting aurora activity in real time. The guide's camera instruction and photo package mean you leave with images regardless of whether the lights appear, though sightings depend entirely on natural conditions that night.
