The experience
Tromsø is one of the world's best places to see the Northern Lights, and this tour builds the hunt around comfort and local knowledge. You travel in a heated minibus with your guide and driver, who share stories about Norwegian culture and the science of the Aurora as you move toward the viewing site. Once you arrive, thermal suits keep you warm while you settle around a campfire with reindeer skins, hot chocolate, tea or coffee, and a light dinner made from local ingredients. The guide gives you tips for night photography and takes your portrait against the lights when they appear.
The tour runs five to eight hours depending on weather and aurora activity, and you're dropped back at your Tromsø hotel around 1 to 2 am. Because the Northern Lights are unpredictable, the operator calls all participants the morning of the tour with a weather forecast for that night. If conditions look poor, you can cancel or reschedule with no penalty. A safeguard that matters when you've traveled this far to see them. All the photographs from the night are yours to keep in low resolution. High-resolution files are available for an extra charge.
A minimum of five participants is required for the tour to run. Children under eight are not permitted, though the operator recommends booking a private tour if you're traveling with younger ones. The guide speaks Spanish throughout, and the group is small enough that you're not competing for the guide's attention or the best viewing angles.
