The experience

The northern lights don't follow a schedule, so this tour chases them across the Tromsø Fjords area where the guide knows the clearest skies and darkest spots. You'll travel with a professional photographer who helps you frame and capture the aurora as it appears, not just watch it happen. Tripods, insulated winter suits and warm boots are provided, so you only need to bring a camera and dress for the cold. The guide emails you photos from the night afterward.

Between aurora searches, you'll warm up in a gapahuk, a traditional Norwegian shelter with a log-burning fire, where hot tea, coffee, soup and cheese sandwiches appear. Sometimes the group cooks over an open fire outside. The small group size means no crowds jostling for position or blocking shots, and the guide adjusts the route and timing based on cloud cover and forecast: a night that starts in one valley might shift to another if conditions improve elsewhere.

Transportation from Tromsø is included. The tour lasts anywhere from 6 to 10 hours depending on how long the lights stay visible and how far the group needs to travel to find clear skies. Before booking, let the guide know your snowsuit and boot size so the right gear is ready when you arrive.
