The Experience

I’ll be honest, I didn’t expect the border crossing from North Macedonia into Kosovo to feel so casual—just a sleepy guard, a stamp, and suddenly the road signs switched languages. Our guide (he’d lived in both Pristina and Prizren) started pointing out tiny villages tucked into the hills. The Newborn monument was bright with graffiti; our guide said it changes every year for independence day. Lunch options ranged from Burger King to these tiny places with burek and thick yogurt—I went local but almost ordered fries too.

Prizren felt warmer somehow—maybe it was just late afternoon sun bouncing off river stones or maybe because people kept waving as we crossed the bridge toward Sinan Pasha’s Mosque. There was this moment at the League of Prizren Memorial where an old man nodded at me; not sure why that stuck with me but it did. The fortress climb is a bit of a scramble but worth it for that sweep of rooftops and mountains behind—my phone camera doesn’t do it justice.

If you add Kukes in Albania (which we did), get ready for another border check—this time more questions but still friendly enough. Lunch by Fierza Lake at Kulla e Lumes: grilled fish, lamb stew, flia pastry layered like some kind of edible quilt. The bread came straight from their oven; I burned my fingers grabbing it too soon but couldn’t wait. Our guide joked about his “beginner Albanian”—the waitress laughed harder than she needed to. You can visit underground bunkers here if you want (costs extra). The drive back got quiet as everyone dozed off except me; I kept looking out at those mountains thinking how odd it feels to cross three countries before dinner.
