The experience

Ohrid lies on the shores of Lake Ohrid, Europe's oldest lake, and the town itself is called the Jerusalem of the Balkans for its role as the center from which Christianity spread through these lands. The Ancient Theater sits at the foot of Samuel's Fortress on the eastern slope of the Ohrid hill. It was built between two hills that shield it from wind and give it remarkable acoustics, which is why the Ohrid Summer Festival uses it as one of its main stages. Samuel's Fortress itself dates to medieval times and still stands watching over the town and lake from above.

The Church of Saint John at Kaneo stands alone on a cliff overlooking Lake Ohrid above the fishing settlement of Kaneo, combining Byzantine and Armenian architectural elements. At the Plaoshnik archaeological site, the Church of Saint Clement and the Church of Saint Panteleimon sit together. Saint Clement, the founder of the Cyrillic alphabet, was buried here, and this is the place from which Christianity was spread through the region. The Church of Holy Wisdom, built in the 9th century on the foundations of a 5th-century Christian basilica, served as the cathedral during Tzar Samoil's rule and was renovated with frescoes between 1037 and 1056. The tour also includes the Bay of Bones, a Neolithic settlement reconstructed to show how prehistoric people lived on water, protected from mainland dangers.

Your guide speaks English and drives the vehicle, handling all transfers from your hotel or preferred location in Skopje in a comfortable air-conditioned car or minivan. The day runs eleven hours total. Entrance fees to the sites are not included in the tour price.
