The experience
The drive from Skopje takes three hours, giving you time to settle in before the walking portion begins. Once in Ohrid, the guide leads you through the city's layered history: you'll stand at the Ancient Theatre, one of the oldest in the region, then climb to Samoil's Fortress, where the views open across the water and the surrounding landscape. The fortress itself was rebuilt in medieval style by King Samuil in the late 900s, restoring an earlier structure that Philip II of Macedon had begun.
Lake Ohrid itself carries the weight of recognition: UNESCO designated Macedonia's side a World Heritage Site in 1979, extended in 1980 to include the cultural and historic area of the city. The lake is Europe's oldest, and NASA named one of Titan's moons after it. The Church of St. John at Kaneo sits on a cliff directly above the water, its frescoes (discovered during 1964 restoration work) dating back to at least the 13th century, though the exact construction date remains unknown. The church's position makes it one of the most photographed spots in the region.
You'll have free time to eat lunch at a local restaurant during the day. In warmer months, you have the option to swim in the lake or book a separate boat trip for an additional cost. The return to Skopje is included, with the full tour ending after a full day of walking and stops.
