The experience
St. Jovan Bigorski sits on the Bigor rocks above the Radika canyon, surrounded by dense forest on the north and west slopes of Bistra Mountain. The monastery complex holds a church, charnel house, defense tower, and guest shelters: a working religious site, not a museum piece. The canyon itself frames the approach: the river cuts through stone, and the monastery occupies a shelf of land that feels both isolated and inhabited. This is the largest monastery in North Macedonia, and the tour builds the day around reaching it.
Before the monastery, you move through the landscape in sequence. Sharko cave opens underground: stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral formations create the geology without narration needed. Galicnik village sits on the route: the place where the Galicka svadba wedding festival happens every July 12th, though you visit outside that window. Mavrovo Lake appears as you drive the canyon road, water and stone together. After the monasteries and the waterfall, lunch in Mavrovo itself gives you time to settle before the return to Skopje.
Your guide speaks English and travels with you the entire day. Hotel pickup starts the morning, and drop-off ends it. The private vehicle holds your group (whether you book for one person or up to fifteen), so there is no waiting for other travelers or switching vehicles between stops. Lunch, all fuel, taxes and service fees are already in the price.

Top questions
What is inside Sharko cave that makes it worth the visit?
Sharko cave holds stalactites, stalagmites, and mineral corals that form underground ornaments without human intervention. The cave is an unaltered geological site, the kind of formation that takes millennia to build.
Does the tour include a stop at Mavrovo Lake?
Yes. You drive along Mavrovo Lake as part of the route through the Radika canyon on the way to St. Jovan Bigorski monastery. The lake and canyon form the landscape between Galicnik village and the monastery.
What kind of lunch is included, and where do you eat?
A traditional lunch in Mavrovo is included in the tour price. The specific menu and restaurant are not detailed in advance, but the meal is part of the seven-hour itinerary and happens before the return to Skopje.
Can I book this tour for just one person, or does it require a group?
The tour is private and available for one person or any group up to fifteen. You choose your group size at checkout: the same private vehicle and guide serve a solo traveler or a larger party, and the price adjusts by group size.
Is this tour suitable if I have mobility concerns or physical limitations?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. It is not recommended for travelers with spinal injuries due to the vehicle travel and cave visit. If you have specific mobility needs, contact the operator before booking to confirm what the stops and terrain involve.
