Step-by-step itinerary
Tour Kosovo: Pristina, Grachanica, Prizren
- Visit Grachanica monastery
- Explore Pristina city
- Discover Prizren old bazaar and mosques
- Walk uphill to Prizren Fortress
The experience
You leave Skopje in an air-conditioned vehicle and head first to Grachanica, a monastery built by Serbian king Stefan Milutin in 1321 on the ruins of a 6th-century basilica. The site sits on UNESCO's World Heritage List and was declared a Monument of Culture of Exceptional Importance in 1990. Entry and time inside are included. Dress modestly for the church. From there the route moves to Pristina, Kosovo's capital and largest city, where you get a sense of the country's administrative center before heading south to Prizren in the afternoon.
Prizren is where the day opens up. The town sits in the southeast and has been called Kosovo's historical capital, with one of the oldest settlements in the western Balkans: archaeological digs at Prizren Fortress show habitation back to the Bronze Age. The old bazaar, Sinan Pasha Mosque, the Orthodox Church of St George, and the Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour line the streets. You'll have time to taste local food and drinks before climbing to Kalaja fortress, a 20-minute walk uphill from the town center. The fortress overlooks the river valley and sits on a strategic hilltop. The panoramic view of Prizren and the surrounding landscape is the payoff for the climb.
The tour runs 10 hours total and includes a bottle of water per person. Your guide speaks English and will drive as well if the group is small (2–3 people). Hotel pickup and drop-off anywhere in Skopje are built in, so you don't arrange transport separately. Departures are guaranteed every Wednesday and Saturday.
