The experience

Skopje Kale Fortress sits at the start, overlooking the Vardar River from the old town's highest point. From there the route climbs Mount Vodno to the Millennium Cross (a 66-meter monument at 1,066 meters elevation), where the cable car runs unless weather or maintenance closes it. When it does, a mini-bus takes you to a panoramic stop at Mid-Vodno instead. The cable car is not operating until October 2026 due to major maintenance work.

The tour then moves to St. Pantelejmon Church in Gorno Nerezi, a 12th-century Byzantine structure in a monastery complex, before reaching Etno Village on Vodno's slopes. The village is a modern open-air complex built to show traditional Macedonian architecture (stone houses, wooden balconies, rural design), and sits quiet enough to photograph and walk without crowds. Matka Canyon comes last, a 5,000-hectare gorge west of central Skopje that holds the country's oldest artificial lake, medieval monasteries, endemic plants, butterflies and dramatic cliffs. The canyon is home to caves accessible by boat, though a one-hour boat ride to Vrelo Cave leaves no time for lunch that day.

An English-speaking local guide leads the group, and air-conditioned transport is included. The tour runs six hours, operates rain or shine year-round, and suits all fitness levels. Arrive five minutes early. If you are traveling with children under 4, a private tour can arrange a child safety seat. Group tours do not carry them.
