The experience

The tour starts at Skopje's main square, where the huge monument of Alexander the Great anchors the city center. From there, the walk moves through the pedestrian street Macedonia and past the brutalist buildings designed by Japanese architect Kenzo Tange after the 1956 earthquake. You'll see the embassies of Italy and Spain among them. The route takes in the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, who was born in Skopje in 1910, and crosses the Old Stone Bridge into the Old Bazaar, the second-largest Turkish bazaar after Istanbul's.

Inside the bazaar, the guide shows you the Mustafa Pasa Mosque and the warren of shops and stalls that make up this Ottoman-era market. The walk ends at Kale Park and the fortress overlooking the city. At a bakery that has been operating since 1956, you'll have breakfast with simit (traditional bread), and you'll taste homemade baklava and boza: a thick, slightly sweet drink that dates back to Ottoman times. The whole route takes just under two hours, which leaves the rest of your day open.
