The experience
The day starts at 9 a.m. with pickup from your hotel. Your guide takes you first to the Old Bazaar, where Ottoman-era Caravanserais (trading inns) still stand from when Skopje was a major Balkan trade hub. You'll hear the stories of Yugoslavia and modern life in the country from someone who lived through both, then climb to Kale Fortress on the highest hill in the city. The remains date to the Middle Ages and Ottoman period, and your guide walks you through the history of the region's turbulent past.
After the fortress, you cross the Vardar River on the Stone Bridge, the only preserved medieval bridge, into the new part of Skopje. You'll see the neo-classical Macedonia Square with its statue of Alexander the Great and his father Phillip II, then visit the Memorial House of Mother Teresa, Skopje's most famous native. The museum holds a large photography collection tracing her life and work. The walking tour ends at the Gate Macedonia, a newly built triumphal arch. You then have two hours free to have lunch and try traditional Macedonian food. Your guide can recommend places.
After lunch, your guide drives you 40 minutes to Matka Canyon, one of North Macedonia's most striking natural landscapes. You board a boat that takes you into the canyon itself. The boat stops at the entrance of a cave, which your guide shows you before the journey back. On the return, you pass by what is believed to be the world's deepest underwater cave, though it's not visible in detail from the surface. Your guide returns you to your hotel in Skopje when the boat trip ends.
