The experience
The tour starts with pickup from your Managua hotel or airport, then heads to Granada for a private boat ride through the islets: about an hour on the water where you'll see monkeys, visit the 250-year-old San Pablo fortress, and photograph Mombacho volcano from the water. Back on shore, your guide walks you through the colonial city to the main cathedral, the bell tower of La Merced Church (the highest viewpoint in town), and La Calzada street, where you can stop for lunch on your own. The afternoon moves to Catarina, a natural reserve with soft hiking trails where monkeys live in the canopy, then to Masaya Volcano for the sunset. You'll stand at the crater's edge and watch the orange glow of active lava as the light fades.
Day two is built around León's history. You visit the Ruins of León Viejo, the original city destroyed by eruption and earthquake in 1610, with views of Momotombo Volcano across the lake. Then you move to the current city of León to walk on top of the cathedral roof, tour the Museum of Myths and Legends, and see the Museum Rubén Darío. The drive back to Managua or León closes the tour. Entrance fees to some churches and Masaya Volcano are optional depending on which package you choose at checkout. The boat ride is paid directly to the captain on the day.
Your guide and driver stay with you both days in an air-conditioned vehicle. The pace is set by the stops themselves (the boat, the walking sections, the hike) rather than rushed between them. Public transport is available nearby if you prefer to move independently at any point, and the tour is suitable for all fitness levels, though the Catarina hike and cathedral roof climb involve stairs and uneven ground.

Is this one for you?Choose the "Hustle free" option if you want entrance fees handled upfront and one less decision on the ground. Pick a Managua departure if you're flying in and need airport collection, or Granada if you're already staying there and want to skip the drive from the capital. The two-day span lets you see both the active volcano and the buried colonial city without splitting them across separate bookings.

Top questions
What languages is the guide in?
Live guide in English and Spanish.
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 12 years): free; Infant (under 4): free.
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly happens on the boat ride through Granada's islets?
The private boat tour lasts about an hour and includes a stop at San Pablo fortress, built over 250 years ago, where you can walk around and photograph the structure. You'll see monkeys in the islets and get views of Mombacho volcano from the water, which is the backdrop for the 365 islets that give the lake its character.
Can I choose which entrance fees to pay, or are they all required?
Entrance fees to churches and Masaya Volcano are optional and depend on which package you select at checkout. The "Hustle free" option includes entrances. The other two options do not. You decide before you book which level of inclusion suits you.
Is food included in the tour, or do I pay separately?
Food and drinks are not included. You'll have time to eat lunch on your own at La Calzada street in Granada, and you can purchase meals or snacks elsewhere during the two days. Your guide will point out options but won't arrange them for you.
What is the Ruins of León Viejo, and why is it worth seeing?
The Ruins of León Viejo are the remains of the original city of León, destroyed by a volcanic eruption and earthquake in 1610. The site shows the colonial layout buried in ash, and the nearby Momotombo Volcano is visible across the lake. It's a rare chance to see both the volcano that destroyed the city and the city it destroyed in one view.
Do I have to do the hike at Catarina, or can I skip it?
The hike at Catarina is part of the itinerary, but it's described as soft and nice rather than strenuous. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels. If you have mobility concerns, mention them when you book so your guide can advise on what's feasible for you on the day.
What if I'm arriving late or leaving early? Can I start or end the tour in Granada instead of Managua?
Yes. You can choose to start or end in Granada instead of Managua when you book. Pickup and drop-off are included in your package, so you can arrange the tour around your flight or hotel location.
