The experience
The day starts on the water. Your guide and boat captain take you out on Lake Nicaragua to the islets surrounding Granada, where you'll spot monkeys on the islands and stop to walk around the San Pablo fortress, built over 250 years ago. Bring a camera: the wildlife and ruins make for strong shots, and the light off the water stays good through the morning.
After the boat returns, the walking tour moves through Granada's colonial center on foot. You'll see the main cathedral and a cluster of churches that mark the Spanish colonization, then climb the bell tower of La Merced Church, which sits at the highest point in town and gives you the full layout of the city below. La Calzada street, the busiest pedestrian strip, runs through the route and has restaurants if you want to stop for lunch on your own time.
The tour finishes at the Catarina viewpoint, a natural reserve on higher ground where the air cools and the pace slows. You'll walk through the reserve itself and may see more monkeys moving through the trees. Your guide speaks both English and Spanish throughout, and the whole experience runs about 7 hours from the time you're picked up.
