The experience
The day starts on the water. A boat captain and your guide take you through the islets of Granada, where you'll spot monkeys, birds and other wildlife. You get off at the fortress San Pablo to learn its history before heading back to the boat. The lake crossing gives you the camera moments most Granada visitors miss: the wildlife and the water itself are the draw here, not a crowded viewpoint on land.
After the boat, the guide walks you through Granada's colonial center on foot. You'll visit the main cathedral and other churches from the 1600s, and climb the bell tower of La Merced Church, which the operator notes is the best viewpoint in town for pictures of the whole city. La Calzada street, the most popular street in Granada, is where you can stop for lunch at a restaurant of your choice (lunch is not included). The walking pace is easy and the architecture speaks for itself: no rushing between stops.
The tour ends at Catarina lookout, where you stand above the crater of an extinct volcano and look down into the Laguna de Apoyo nature reserve. There's a short, soft walk through the reserve itself if you want it. If you choose the Masaya volcano option at checkout, the guide drives you all the way to the top, no hiking required, so you can photograph the orange reflection of the lava in the background. The whole experience is narrated by a bilingual guide in a modern air-conditioned vehicle, with hotel or airport pickup and drop-off included.
