The experience
The drive to Mount Cook takes you through the Mackenzie Basin and past Lake Pukaki, a glacial lake famous for its turquoise color, before you reach Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park. Your guide handles the route and the timing. You sit back and watch the Southern Alps come into view. The road itself is one of New Zealand's most photographed stretches.
At Hooker Valley Track, you walk roughly 30 minutes into the trail and back, moving along the Hooker River at the base of Mount Cook. The path crosses swing bridges, passes glaciers and mountains, and runs through terrain where native Kea birds sometimes appear. This is not a long hike (the focus is on the setting rather than the distance), but the walk puts you inside the landscape instead of viewing it from the car.
On the return drive, you stop at Lake Tekapo for a photo break and views of the Southern Alps reflected in the water. Before heading back to Timaru, the tour includes a stop at Fairlie Bakehouse for one of New Zealand's famous meat pies and coffee. The whole outing runs 7.5 hours from pickup to drop-off.
