The experience

The three hikes (11km on day one, 9km on day two, and 9.5km on day three) are designed so the scenery does the work instead of the pack weight. A 4WD ride takes you out to the trailhead on the first morning after you arrive for a hosted three-course BBQ the night before. Each day you walk between huts, and your duffel bag and cooler bin are transported ahead. You'll find them waiting when you arrive. Elevation gains range from 396m to 590m across the three days, and lunch shelters with hot water and kettles sit halfway along the longer stretches.

You sleep in three different settings: the historic Cookhouse on night one (twin share or bunk rooms), Valley Camp in shared bunk huts on night two, and a log cabin with bunk rooms or glamping tents on night three. All bedding (sleeping bag, bag liner, fitted sheet, pillow and case) is provided. Breakfast, lunch, dinner, tea and coffee come with the package. Bring your own snacks and drinks if you want extras. The hosts, Shaun and Haley, run the farm and stay in radio contact with each group, send evening weather updates and offer 24-hour support. If you feel unwell, transport to the next camp is always an option.

You'll need to arrange your own transport to Island Hills Station by 5:30pm on your arrival evening, or book a shuttle service in advance. The hike finishes after 1pm on day three, so you can depart the same day. Email the hosts ahead with any dietary requirements for the meals.

Is this one for you?Self-guided means you walk at your own pace with no guide narrating the route, so it suits hikers who want independence and quiet in the backcountry. The shared accommodation and group radio check-ins keep you connected to support without constant company, which works well for those comfortable with self-reliance but wanting a safety net in remote terrain.
