The experience

The first part is all instruction. You get one-on-one training from your guide and as much practice time as you need to feel steady on the Segway before you leave the base on Devonport Wharf. Once you're comfortable, you head out around the waterfront toward Cheltenham beach, where the Hauraki Gulf opens up in front of you and Rangitoto Island rises across the water: the youngest volcanic cone in the region at only 650 years old.

The ride loops back through the village's back streets, where you get a chance to test the Segway on hills and uneven ground while passing beautifully restored Victorian villas. There's time to stop for photos of the scenery and of yourself on the Segway. Your guide provides live commentary throughout, pointing out the history and landmarks as you go.

The whole experience runs about 90 minutes. You choose from morning, lunchtime or afternoon departures depending on the season. Some options include transport to the start location, others don't. The tour operates in all weather, so dress for the conditions. Maximum group size is six people, and you'll wear a helmet the entire time.

Top questions

What's Rangitoto Island and why is it visible from Cheltenham beach?

Rangitoto Island is a volcanic cone rising from the Hauraki Gulf just offshore from Devonport. At only 650 years old, it's Auckland's youngest volcano, and you'll see it clearly across the water from Cheltenham beach during the ride.

Do I need to have ridden a Segway before, or does the training cover everything?

No prior experience is needed. The tour starts with one-on-one training and plenty of practice time at the base before you ride out, so you'll be comfortable on the Segway before heading around the village.

Can I choose what time of day the tour runs?

Yes. You pick from morning, lunchtime or afternoon departures depending on the season: Summer Morning, Winter Morning, Summer Lunchtime, Winter Afternoon or Summer Afternoon rides are all available.

What happens if the weather is really bad?

The tour operates in all weather and you should dress appropriately for conditions. If conditions become extreme and unsafe for riding, you'll be offered an alternative date or a refund minus an administration fee.

Is transport to Devonport Wharf included in the price?

Transport to the start location is included in some options but not others. Check which option you're booking to see whether pickup is part of your package.
