The experience

You arrive at the office in Devonport to meet your guide and get fitted with a helmet. Before the tour leaves, your guide teaches you to ride the Segway one-to-one and gives you time to practice on flat ground. Once you're comfortable, the group rides together to North Head, the volcanic cone that rises above the seaside village.

At the summit, the views open across Auckland City and the Hauraki Gulf. Your guide leads you through the remains of the fort built in the 1880s and explains the site's Māori and European history as you walk the grounds. The tour also takes you through the Victorian village streets, along the beaches and through the parks that surround the reserve. A small amount of walking is involved on the North Head itself.

The tour runs every day of the week, with three departure times to choose from in summer and two in winter, so you can fit it into your Auckland itinerary without advance planning. Groups stay small, no more than six people, which means your guide can answer questions and adjust the pace to the group's comfort level.

Top questions

Can I do this tour if I've never ridden a Segway before?

Yes. Your guide teaches you one-to-one at the office before the tour starts and gives you time to practice until you're confident. Everyone gets the same instruction regardless of experience.

What are the views like from the top of North Head?

From the summit you see across Auckland City and the Hauraki Gulf. The volcanic cone sits above Devonport, so the views back toward the city and out to sea are the main reason the guide takes the group there.

How much walking is involved?

A small amount of walking happens on North Head itself as you explore the fort and the grounds. Most of the tour is on the Segway. The walking is around the historic site once you arrive.

What's the difference between the summer and winter tour times?

Summer offers three departure times daily and winter offers two. The tour itself is the same. You're just choosing which time slot fits your day.

Is this tour suitable for children?

Children must be at least 13 years old and accompanied by an adult. Younger children can join Family Fun Ride or A Taste of Segway tours, which have a minimum age of 10.

What happens if the weather is bad?

The tour operates in all weather, so dress appropriately for the conditions. If extreme weather makes it unsafe to ride, you'll be offered an alternative date or a refund minus an administration fee.
