The Experience
I didn’t expect to start my day in Rotorua standing quietly by a smooth black stone, but that’s where our Wai Ariki Hot Springs & Spa journey began. Our guide greeted us with a gentle nod—she said the mauri stone holds the energy of the land. I’m not sure if it was the hush of everyone else or just the faint scent of eucalyptus in the air, but I actually felt myself let go a little. The blessing she gave was simple, almost whispered, and for a moment I forgot about my phone buzzing in my locker.
The restorative journey itself is kind of a slow drift from one sensation to another. We moved between hot and cold pools (the cold plunge really wakes you up—my toes still remember), then into saunas that smelled faintly herbal. There were only a handful of us—maybe 10?—so it never felt crowded or rushed. When we reached the mud lounge, I hesitated at first, but everyone else was already laughing as they smeared on this thick grey mud that’s meant to be full of minerals from Rotorua’s earth. It felt cool and gritty at first, but after rinsing off my skin felt… well, different. Softer maybe.
Our guide shared pūrākau—Māori stories—between each part. She explained how Ngāti Whakaue have always used these waters for healing; her voice echoed softly off the tiled walls while steam curled around us. Sometimes I caught glimpses of Lake Rotorua through big windows—the water outside looked almost silver under cloudy skies. At some point I lost track of time completely, which is rare for me.
The last stop was this quiet steam room with heated stones. No one spoke much there; just slow breathing and a kind of shared calm. Before we left, our guide offered a closing blessing—a small gesture but it stuck with me. Even now when I catch that earthy mineral smell on my towel at home, it takes me back for a second.
