The experience

You leave Rotorua I-Site at 9:15am and head south for twenty minutes to reach Wai-o-Tapu Scenic Reserve. The first stop is the Mud Pool, where geothermal activity churns beneath the surface. The guide explains what drives the landscape you're standing in. From there it's a short walk to Lady Knox Geyser, a natural hot spring that erupts on schedule. The guide shares how it was discovered and what makes it work. By 10:30am you're at the main Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, where you walk at your own pace through the park's most striking features: the Champagne Pool with its vivid mineral colors, sinter terrace formations, steaming ground vents, vast volcanic craters and the expansive views across the reserve.

Entry to both Lady Knox Geyser and Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is included, so there's no separate ticket to buy at the gate. The guide travels with you but doesn't dictate the pace once you're in the park. You choose how long to spend at each viewpoint and which trails to follow. The shuttle departs the reserve at 12:30pm and arrives back at Rotorua I-Site between 1:00pm and 1:30pm, leaving your afternoon free.

Top questions

Can children come?

Yes. Ticket types: Child (5 to 14 years); Infant (under 5): free.

What exactly is the Mud Pool and why does the guide take you there first?

The Mud Pool is a geothermal feature where hot mud churns beneath the surface due to underground heat and gases. The guide uses it as an introduction to how the landscape works: what you see above ground is powered by activity below, which shapes everything else you'll encounter in the reserve.

Does Lady Knox Geyser erupt on a schedule, or is it random?

Lady Knox Geyser erupts predictably, which is why the tour times the stop to catch it. The guide explains the mechanics of how it works and the history of its discovery during your visit.

How much time do you get to walk around Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland itself?

You arrive at the main park around 10:30am and have roughly two hours to walk at your own pace before the shuttle departs at 12:30pm. The park's trails let you see the Champagne Pool, volcanic craters, steaming vents and terrace formations without a fixed route.

Is the guide with you the whole time, or just during the shuttle ride?

The guide travels with you on the shuttle and introduces you to the Mud Pool and Lady Knox Geyser with commentary and stories. Once you're in Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland, you walk at your own pace. The guide doesn't lead a fixed group walk through the park.

What's included in the price, and what costs extra?

Entry to both Lady Knox Geyser and Wai-o-Tapu Thermal Wonderland is included, along with the shuttle transport from Rotorua and the guide's commentary. There are no separate entry fees to pay at the gate.
