A 4-hour small group thermal tour in Rotorua with a local guide, departing daily at 1:15 pm and returning at 5:15 pm. You travel by air-conditioned minivan to Rainbow Mountain, Kerosene Creek, Waiotapu's boiling mud pools, and finish soaking in Waikite Valley Hot Pools—the largest discharge of boiling spring water in New Zealand. The Experience

The tour leaves Rotorua at 1:15 pm and heads straight out of the city to Rainbow Mountain, where a half-hour walk takes you through geothermal vegetation and crater views before you return to the coach. From there, Kerosene Creek is a geothermal-heated river where you can wade in or soak fully, depending on how you feel about the temperature. The stops build toward the main event: Waiotapu's boiling mud pools, where you watch mini-eruptions and hear the sounds of the earth working—this is the largest and best example of active mud in the region, and there's time to take it in without rushing.

The final stretch takes you to Te Manaroa Spring at Waikite Valley, a short walk to where New Zealand's largest source of boiling spring water discharges into the valley. After that, you spend the last part of the afternoon in the mineral hot pools themselves—silky-smooth water that feels nothing like a regular bath. The whole day is paced so you're not standing around between stops, and Stephen, your local guide, knows which thermal areas most visitors miss and which ones are worth the time. You're back in Rotorua by 5:15 pm.

The tour runs in most weather, so bring layers and supportive footwear—trainers or hiking boots work best. Walks total up to 2 kilometers across the day, and the ground is uneven in places: tree roots, rocks and slippery surfaces are part of the geothermal landscape. In the hot pools, keep your head above water. The coach is air-conditioned, and all entry fees and taxes are included in the price.
