The Experience

The 4WD pulls out of central Queenstown and the landscape opens up immediately — tussock hills, the Dart River cutting through, and your guide already pointing out which ridge held the camera crew. You're heading to the actual places where Peter Jackson filmed Isengard, Lothlorien and the Ithilien Camp, not reconstructions or visitor centers, but the real valleys and slopes where the actors stood. The first real stop is the Isengard location, where Mt Earnslaw rises behind it and the Dart River runs below.
