Lord of the Rings 4WD Tour from Queenstown: Filming Locations
Drive into Middle-earth and pan for gold on a historic mining road
A half-day 4WD tour from Queenstown that visits six Lord of the Rings filming locations across the Arrow River valley and Kawarau Gorge, with a live English-speaking guide, hotel pickup and an opportunity to try gold panning. Minimum two travelers required for departure; the tour operates in all weather.
Step-by-step itinerary
4WD tour visiting LOTR filming sites
- Travel up Queenstown hill viewpoint
- Visit Kawarau Gorge Argonath site
- Drive historic gold mining road
- Cross Arrow River and gold pan
- Enjoy panoramic views at Skippers Canyon
The Experience
The tour starts with a climb up Queenstown hill for a bird's-eye view of Lake Wakatipu and Deer Park Heights, where the filmmakers shot the refugees of Rohan and the Battle of the Wargs scenes. From there the 4WD heads into Kawarau Gorge to the Argonath—the Pillars of the Kings—where the river narrows between the two massive stone faces. The vehicle crosses the Arrow River multiple times as it follows a historic gold mining road, stopping at the Ford of Bruinen where you can try your hand at gold panning over morning or afternoon tea.
The final leg climbs to the entrance of Skippers Canyon for panoramic views across the Wakatipu Basin and down into the canyon itself. Your driver and guide narrate the locations and the filming process throughout. The whole outing runs about four hours, which leaves the rest of your day open. Hotel pickup and drop-off in central Queenstown are included, and the vehicle handles rough terrain and river crossings that a standard car cannot.
What’s included
- Transport by 4WD vehicle with a live English-speaking driver and guide.
- hotel pickup and drop-off in central Queenstown.

What Lord of the Rings scenes were filmed at the locations on this tour?
The tour visits six filming locations: Deer Park Heights was used for the refugees of Rohan and the Battle of the Wargs; the Kawarau Gorge stands in for the Argonath, or Pillars of the Kings; the Ford of Bruinen is where the river crossing scenes were shot; and Minas Tirith, the Misty Mountains and Gladden Fields were also filmed in the surrounding area.
Can I actually try gold panning, or is it just a demonstration?
You get the opportunity to try your hand at gold panning yourself during the stop at the Ford of Bruinen, where morning or afternoon tea is also served.
How rough is the 4WD track, and will I need special fitness?
The tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels and crosses rivers and follows a historic mining road, but it is not recommended for travelers with poor cardiovascular health. The 4WD vehicle handles the terrain; you sit inside it.
Does the tour run if the weather is bad?
The tour operates in all weather conditions, so you should dress appropriately for rain, wind or cold. New Zealand's South Island weather can change quickly, so layers are a good idea.
What's included in the price, and what do I need to arrange myself?
The tour includes transport by 4WD vehicle with your driver and guide, hotel pickup and drop-off in Queenstown, and gold panning. Lunch is not included, so bring a packed meal or plan to eat before or after the tour.
