The experience

I still remember the way the rotors sounded, like a heartbeat speeding up, as we lifted off from Queenstown. The city fell away so quickly it was almost funny, and suddenly there was nothing but Lake Wakatipu below, all deep blue and weirdly calm. I pressed my forehead to the window (probably left a smudge, sorry) and tried to take in how the light hit the water.
