Step-by-step itinerary
Helicopter tour over Milford Sound
- Depart from Queenstown by helicopter
- Fly over alpine lakes and mountain peaks
- Land at remote alpine locations twice
- View Milford Sound and Mitre Peak
- Learn about landscape from pilot
- Fly over Tukuko Glacier on return
- Return to Queenstown
The experience
The helicopter leaves Queenstown and flies directly into Fiordland National Park, climbing over the rugged terrain that makes Milford Sound one of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes. You'll see Mitre Peak rise ahead, then descend toward the Sound itself with views of towering peaks, crevasse-filled glaciers and the waterways below. The pilot narrates throughout, pointing out the geography and the shifts in terrain as you move from one zone to another.
Two alpine landings break up the flight and let you step out onto remote ground. These sites sit in country you cannot reach any other way: no road, no hiking trail, just helicopter access. You'll spend time on the actual terrain, not just viewing it from the air, and the cold at altitude means warm layers and sturdy footwear matter. On the return to Queenstown, you'll pass over Tukuko Glacier before heading back to your hotel.
The whole experience runs 1.5 hours from takeoff to landing. Hotel pickup and drop-off are included, so you don't arrange your own transport to the airfield. The pilot is your guide, and the commentary is live, not a recording, so you hear the story of what you're seeing as it unfolds.

Is this one for you? This is a shared helicopter tour, so you'll fly with other passengers, but the two alpine landings set it apart from scenic flights that stay airborne the whole time. You actually land on remote terrain and step out. Choose this if you want access to places you cannot reach on foot or by road, and if you're comfortable with the cold and the altitude that comes with it.

Top questions
Can children come?
Yes. Ticket types: Child (4 to 14 years); Infant (under 4).
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What exactly happens at the two alpine landings?
The helicopter lands on remote alpine terrain twice during the flight, letting you step out and stand on ground that has no road or trail access. The landings are part of the 1.5-hour total flight time, not additions to it.
Can I see Mitre Peak and Milford Sound on this tour?
Yes. Mitre Peak is one of the iconic sights you'll pass on the way to Milford Sound, and you'll fly over the Sound itself before one of the alpine landings. The return flight also takes you over Tukuko Glacier.
Is hotel pickup really included, or do I need to get to the airfield myself?
Hotel pickup and drop-off in Queenstown are included in the tour price. You don't arrange separate transport to the departure point.
What should I wear for this tour?
Warm clothing and sturdy footwear are essential because the alpine landings put you at altitude where temperatures are cold. The operator recommends dressing in layers and bringing appropriate shoes for uneven terrain.
Do I need to be very fit to do this tour?
Moderate fitness is recommended. The landings involve stepping out onto alpine ground, but the tour is suitable for all physical fitness levels. Infants can sit on an adult's lap during the flight.
