Watch geysers erupt and glow worms light an underground river

A private tour from Auckland to Rotorua and Waitomo combines two of New Zealand's most visited natural attractions in a single day. You'll see the Pōhutu geyser (the largest in the Southern Hemisphere, erupting up to 30 meters high), and encounter Māori cultural sites at Te Puia before heading to Waitomo Caves, where thousands of glow worms line the walls of an underground stream you travel by boat. A local guide leads the entire route, and hotel pickup from Auckland is included.

The experience

You start from your Auckland hotel and drive south toward Rotorua, arriving at Te Puia where geothermal activity shapes the landscape. Steam rises from the hills and lakefront as you walk with a local guide past bubbling mud pools and boiling water vents to reach the Pōhutu geyser, which erupts once or twice every hour, shooting water up to 30 meters into the air. At the same site you'll see the Kiwi, New Zealand's national flightless bird, and learn how Māori communities adapted to living in this geothermally active region.

The tour then moves through Rotorua's lakefront and the government gardens before heading to Waitomo Valley. The caves themselves lie beneath farmland, carved over thousands of years by underground streams through soft limestone. You explore on foot first, seeing stalactites and stalagmites formed from mineral-rich water, then board a gentle boat that carries you silently down a subterranean river. The glow worms (Arachnocampa Luminosa, a species found only in New Zealand) line the cave walls and ceiling, their bioluminescence creating the effect of stars reflected in water. A specialist guide provides commentary on the caves' geology and history throughout.

The full day runs 12 and a half hours from pickup to return. Lunch and bottled water are included, along with WiFi on board. The tour is designed as a private booking, so you choose your group size at checkout: a luxury sedan for two, up to three travellers, or up to four guests.
