The experience

The first thing I noticed was the crunch of gravel under my bike tires as we left Napier behind: seagulls squabbling somewhere above the Art Deco roofs. The air smelled faintly salty, not sharp but enough to remind you the sea is close. I kept glancing back to check if I was following the map right (I was), but honestly, it was hard to get lost with that wide sky and the trail hugging the coast. There were a few other cyclists, mostly locals by their easy pace. A couple waved. One old guy shouted something in Kiwi slang I didn’t catch. It felt friendly though.

We stopped at Ātea a Rangi, the star compass, because our neighbor back home had told us not to miss it. After that, we followed the trail inland along the Tukituki River valley: vineyards on both sides, some with workers out trimming vines or waving as we passed.
