The experience

The ride starts at Takaro Trails on Marine Parade in Napier, a short walk from the city center past the pier. You collect your e-bike, helmet and map, then head down the coastal trail toward Cape Kidnappers. After 8km you choose your route: turn inland up the Tutaekuri River toward Brookfields, Church Road or Mission Estate wineries, or keep following the coast across the Tukituki River via Black Bridge to reach Clearview or Elephant Hill. All winery stops sit around 22km from the start, which means another 20–22km back, so the full loop runs close to 40km on flat, dedicated cycle paths.

The trail itself moves through several landscapes (the Pacific coastline, farmland, orchards, river banks and estuaries), so the ride is not just one view repeated. You set the pace and the stops. Winery opening hours vary (Brookfields, Mission Estate and Church Road open daily, others run Thursday to Sunday), and the operator notes that cruise days fill them quickly, sometimes to capacity, so you book tastings or lunch directly with each winery before you ride. Urban Winery sits in the seaside village of Ahuriri if you want a Chardonnay tasting and platter food. The Gin Trap, 4km from the end point, offers over a hundred gins and an outside deck overlooking the inner harbour.

E-bikes mean the flat terrain and distance are manageable for riders with moderate fitness. The operator asks your height at booking and reserves the right to cancel if weather turns unsuitable. You'll need to provide a phone number for contact via text or WhatsApp.

Is this one for you?The route is flat and on dedicated paths, so the main effort is the distance and duration you choose to ride, not steep climbs or technical terrain. Pick this if you want to set your own pace through wine country without a guide, and if you're comfortable cycling 20–40km depending on how many wineries you visit.
