experience

What’s the experience like?

We left Queenstown before sunrise—still half-asleep, but the bus was warm and the seats were honestly comfier than my couch at home. Our guide, Jamie (who grew up in Te Anau), had that dry Kiwi humor that sneaks up on you. He pointed out how the mountains looked like they’d been clawed by giants. I remember the first real stop at Te Anau: lake mist curling off the water, coffee warming my hands, some locals walking their dogs along the shore. The air tasted clean—like nothing back home.

Eglinton Valley just sort of opens up out of nowhere. It’s this huge sweep of gold grass and dark green bush, and we all tumbled out to stretch our legs. I tried to get a photo but it never quite catches that feeling—the cold wind tugging at your jacket and the sound of sheep somewhere far off. At Mirror Lakes, Jamie told us to crouch low for “the real reflection.” I almost slipped on the boardwalk (not my most graceful moment), but it was worth it—the mountains upside down in still water, so sharp you could almost touch them.

The drive through Homer Tunnel felt like entering another world—wet stone walls dripping in silence except for our voices echoing. On the other side: sheer cliffs and waterfalls everywhere, just pouring down like someone left a tap running up in the clouds. We met a couple of kea parrots at Monkey Creek—one tried to steal someone’s snack wrapper (Jamie called him “the local troublemaker”). There was this wild smell—cold rock and moss mixed with something sweet from the alpine plants.

I didn’t expect Milford Sound itself to feel so quiet—even with everyone on deck for the cruise. The boat glided past seals sprawled on rocks; waterfalls sprayed us if you stood too close (I did). Lunch was simple but good—hot soup as rain tapped against the windows. I kept thinking how tiny we all seemed between those cliffs. On the way back, most people nodded off but I watched rain streak across the glass, kind of wishing we could do it again tomorrow.
