The Experience

The day started early — I was still rubbing sleep out of my eyes when the Mercedes van pulled up outside our place in Queenstown. Our guide, Sam, had this way of making everyone feel like we’d known him for ages. There were only about a dozen of us, so it never felt crowded or rushed. As we drove along Lake Wakatipu, the water was this weird blue-grey that looked almost fake, and Sam kept pointing out little things I’d have missed: sheep huddled under trees, a lone fisherman waving from the shore. At Te Anau, we stopped for coffee by the lake. I remember the smell — damp earth mixed with espresso and something sweet someone brought from the bakery.

Heading into Fiordland, everything just got bigger and quieter. The mountains felt close enough to touch sometimes. We stopped more than I expected — Mirror Lakes was one of those places where you can actually see why they call it that (I tried to get a photo but my reflection just looked confused). There was this moment in Eglinton Valley where all you could hear was wind and birds. Sam told us about the kea parrots — one actually landed on our van mirror and stared at me like it was sizing me up for snacks. The Homer Tunnel felt like stepping into another world; cold air rushed in as we waited for the light to change.

I didn’t really know what to expect from Milford Sound itself. You see photos everywhere but being there — standing on the deck of that small boat with waterfalls thundering down around us — it’s different. The air tasted salty and fresh at once. Our onboard guide pointed out seals lounging on rocks (honestly looked like they were posing) and someone spotted dolphins off the bow. Lunch was simple but good; I ate my sandwich watching mist curl around Mitre Peak, thinking how small we all seemed out there.

The flight back to Queenstown is still kind of surreal in my memory. Our pilot, Jess, handed out headphones and made sure nobody was nervous (I definitely was). Seeing those mountains from above — glaciers shining in patches of sun, rivers twisting below — I just sat there grinning like an idiot most of the way. When we landed back in Queenstown I felt tired but sort of peaceful too. It’s hard to explain; maybe you’ll get it if you go.
