The experience

The Homer Tunnel, completed in 1953 at 945 metres above sea level, pierces solid rock to reach the coast. A 1.2-kilometre engineering feat that made road access to Milford Sound possible.

Once at the fiord, you board the Milford Haven for a cruise through the heart of Milford Sound. The boat carries you past cascading waterfalls dropping from towering cliffs, their sheer force a visible reminder of the region's extreme rainfall. The commentary onboard covers the area's geology, history and wildlife. Seals, dolphins and diverse bird species inhabit these waters, though sightings are never guaranteed. An air-conditioned coach returns you to Te Anau after the cruise ends.
