A self-guided bike tour of Hawke's Bay's Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels wine regions, where you collect a bike from Ash Ridge Wines' vineyard and cycle flat trails to visit wineries of your choice. Tasting fees and lunch are your own expense, but roadside support and a winery map are included, and the operator collects any wine you buy.
The Experience
You collect your bike between 10am and 12pm from Ash Ridge Wines, sitting 200 metres from your first winery. The region is flat and the trails are purpose-built for cycling, so the pedalling is easy. With a winery map in hand, you choose which cellar doors to stop at—Sileni Wines, Paritua Vineyard, Alpha Domus, Oak Estate, Trinity Hill, Unison Vineyard or Stonecroft are all options, though not all open every weekday. The Bridge Pa Triangle and Gimblett Gravels hold the highest concentration of cellar doors in Hawke's Bay, so there is plenty to explore without backtracking.
Your day unfolds at your own speed. Many wineries offer cheese platters for lunch, and a few have fuller menus; you pay for tastings and food as you go. Roadside support is there if you hit a flat tyre or need help, and the operator will collect any wine you purchase and hold it for you (summer only), so you ride unencumbered. Depending on how many wineries you visit and how long you linger, the tour typically runs four to six hours. You return your bike to the starting point when you are done.
