The Experience
We climbed onto the little boat at Franz Josef, and honestly, I didn’t expect to feel so far away from everything so quickly. The lake was still, just a few ripples from the motor, and our guide—Matt, I think—pointed out these tiny black shags perched on half-sunken logs. There was this fresh damp smell in the air, like moss and wet bark. I kept thinking it felt older than anywhere I’d ever walked before.
After maybe fifteen minutes we reached this narrow landing—no dock, just soft mud and a rope to steady yourself. The rainforest trail is only open to people on this cruise (Matt said even locals can’t wander here), which made it feel sort of special but also like you had to tread lightly. There were big tree roots everywhere; I nearly tripped twice and Matt grinned and handed me a walking pole. He told us about the Kiwi Sanctuary—how they’re trying to keep predators out so the birds can survive. We actually heard one calling somewhere deep in the bush but didn’t see it. The light came through all green and gold; it was humid but not hot.
I liked that we stopped every so often so Matt could show us weird plants or explain why some trees looked twisted. At one point he picked up a leaf for us to smell—it was spicy and sharp, almost gingery? Li laughed when I tried to say its Māori name—probably butchered it. The whole walk is only about 400 meters but you move slow because there’s always something happening: birds flitting overhead or sudden silence except for your boots squelching in the mud. At the end of the track, another boat met us for pickup (which felt oddly VIP). We finished with mugs of tea by the water while sandflies tried their luck at our ankles.
