The Experience

I didn’t expect the water to look like glass. We stepped onto the little boat at Lake Mapourika and it was so still that I could see the mountains upside down—like someone had painted them twice. Our skipper, Pete (he’s lived here forever), handed me a mug of coffee before we even left the dock. He told us to keep an eye out for tūī and fantails along the shore. I tried to snap a photo but my hands were shaking from excitement—or maybe just caffeine.

The cruise felt personal, not rushed at all. Pete slowed near this patch of tangled rainforest where he said kiwis sometimes wander at night. The air smelled green, if that makes sense—sort of mossy and sweet after last night’s rain. We drifted close enough that I heard a bellbird somewhere in the branches, though I couldn’t spot it. Someone asked about glaciers and Pete pointed out where they hid behind the clouds—he knows every peak by name.
