Step-by-step itinerary
Goldmining and pottery experiences
- Experience goldmining for two hours
- Ride Driving Creek Railway to Eyeful Tower
- Attend pottery class for one and a half hours
The experience
Coromandel Peninsula sits just east of Auckland on New Zealand's North Island, and this private tour takes you there by vehicle with your own guide. The day opens at a working goldmine where you spend around two hours learning the techniques and panning for real gold to keep: a hands-on introduction to the region's mining heritage that actually yields something tangible.
The pottery class happens at Driving Creek Railway & Potteries, a complex built into the natural bush setting on the outskirts of Coromandel town. You'll tour the pottery shop, see finished works in the craft shop, then spend an hour and a half at the wheel or working with clay under instruction. The site itself sits on the property where potter Barry Brickell built New Zealand's first wood-fired stoneware kiln in 1974, using bricks salvaged from a demolished hotel in town. After the class, you ride the narrow-gauge mountain railway: a one-hour round trip through replanted forest up to the Eyeful Tower, a viewing platform that rises 165 metres above the surrounding coast, with views over Coromandel Harbour and beyond.
Your guide drives you in a private vehicle throughout the day and handles all entrance fees. Hotel pickup and drop-off in Auckland are included. A minimum of two people per booking is required, and the group stays at six or fewer.

Is this one for you?Book this tour if you want hands-on making and learning (panning for gold, working with clay, and riding a mountain train) rather than sightseeing from a distance. The private vehicle and guide mean the day moves at your pace, and a minimum group size of two keeps the cost shared if you're traveling with one other person.
