The day starts at Lyttelton Port, where your guide meets you before a 10-minute van ride to Sumner Beach. You'll settle on the deck of a seaside café overlooking Cave Rock with a hot drink: a quiet moment to take in the ocean and the black sand beach before the walk begins. Another short drive brings you to Taylors Mistake Beach, where your guide hands out backpacks, walking poles, water bottles, lunch and snacks, and the track opens ahead.
The Godley Head Loop Track winds through an ancient extinct volcano for roughly three hours. The path is undulating and well-maintained, moving through coastal views in all directions: the Pacific Ocean, Pegasus Bay, Lyttelton Harbour, and the Southern Alps. You'll pass Scott's Hutt, an Antarctic cabin built for early polar expeditions, and restored WWII gun emplacements that sit on the headland overlooking the water. The track is designed to move at a relaxed pace, so there's time to stop and look. Seals, dolphins, and native birdlife often appear along the route, and your guide shares the stories behind what you're seeing: the volcanic landscape, the military history, the wildlife that lives here now.
Lunch happens at a remote beach partway through the walk, in a spot where historic cabins still stand and wildlife sightings are common. You eat the gourmet picnic your guide has carried, then finish the loop back to Taylors Mistake Beach. From there, the van returns you to Lyttelton Port. If time allows and you'd rather explore Christchurch city afterward, your guide can drop you there instead, and you can make your own way back to the ship.
