“That’s the Avon River: see how it just kind of drifts along?” our guide, Mike, pointed as we rolled into Christchurch from Lyttelton port. I’d barely finished my coffee when the city opened up in front of us, all patched together with new glass buildings next to old stone ones. The scars from the earthquakes are still there if you look: Mike didn’t shy away from showing us what changed. It was weirdly moving to see people out with their dogs or reading on benches in Cathedral Square, like life just keeps going even after everything shakes.
Mona Vale Gardens was quieter than I expected. Just a couple of locals walking their dogs and a gardener who nodded at us but didn’t say much. There was this damp smell from the river and the grass, kind of earthy and sweet. We wandered under these huge trees that must’ve seen more than we ever will. At one point I tried to skip a stone but it plopped straight in (my partner laughed way too hard).
