The experience
Eight hours round-trip means roughly four hours of driving and four hours exploring the stops themselves. The day starts at Lake Lyndon, a scenic alpine lake ringed by Southern Alps views, then moves to Castle Hill, where enormous weathered limestone boulders scattered across the landscape invite hiking, rock climbing, bouldering or just photography among the formations. From there the route climbs toward Arthur's Pass National Park along the Great Alpine Highway, passing the Otira Viaduct Lookout (a striking engineering viewpoint over the steep Otira Gorge) before reaching the park's interior.
The waterfall and cave are the day's two main walks. Devil's Punchbowl is a short to moderate hike with stairs leading to a 131-meter cascade, one of the region's tallest. Cave Stream Scenic Reserve is a natural cave system running beneath the Southern Alps where you walk through the 362-meter passage with the stream flowing beside and beneath you: a rare chance to move through a working cave rather than observe it. Your guide leads optional walks at these stops and can suggest routes suited to your pace and interest.
A private vehicle and specialized guide travel with you the whole day, handling the route and timing. Bottled water is provided. Meals are not, so plan accordingly for the drive. The return to Christchurch follows the same alpine route in reverse, arriving late afternoon.

Is this one for you?The eight-hour commitment leaves room for a full day in Christchurch before or after. A morning departure gets you back by late afternoon, or an afternoon return works if you start elsewhere on the South Island. If you need a shorter outing or want to combine this with other activities in the city, a full-day alpine tour may not fit your schedule.

Top questions
What happens if it rains?
It may be canceled due to bad weather. If that happens, you're offered another date or a refund. Free cancellation up to 24 h before the start.
What is Castle Hill and what can you do there?
Castle Hill is a dramatic limestone karst landscape featuring enormous weathered boulders and rock formations scattered across the area, the result of millions of years of erosion. Visitors can hike among the rocks, attempt rock climbing or bouldering, explore small caves, or photograph the formations.
How long is the walk to Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall?
Devil's Punchbowl is a short to moderate walk with a series of stairs leading to the 131-meter cascade, making it accessible for most fitness levels without requiring a full day's hike.
Can you walk through Cave Stream, or is it just viewing?
Cave Stream is a full walk-through experience: the 362-meter cave system runs beneath the Southern Alps and you travel through it with the stream flowing beside and beneath you, not a viewing platform.
How much of the day is spent driving versus exploring?
The round-trip takes eight hours total, with approximately four hours of driving and four hours at the stops themselves, split between Lake Lyndon, Castle Hill, the Otria Viaduct, the waterfall walk and the cave.
Is lunch included, and where do you eat?
Lunch is not included in this tour, so you'll need to bring food or plan a stop along the Great Alpine Highway. Your guide can suggest options during the drive.
