TranzAlpine Train Arthur's Pass: Scenic Rail & Guided Return
The train crosses the Southern Alps one way. The bus brings you back through two stops most visitors never see.
A 10-hour day trip from Christchurch combining the TranzAlpine train to Arthur's Pass with a guided return journey through Arthur's Pass National Park. You board in Christchurch, ride through river gorges and alpine passes to the village, have an hour to walk to Devils Punchbowl Waterfall or explore on your own, then return by Mercedes Sprinter via the 440-metre Otira Viaduct and the limestone boulders of Castle Hill. The route reverses seasonally: October to April you take the train one way and bus the other. May to September it flips. Lunch is included. A live guide travels with the small group on the return leg.

The experience
You start the morning at Christchurch Train Station, boarding the TranzAlpine, consistently ranked among the world's most scenic rail journeys. The train leaves the city behind, crosses the Canterbury Plains, then narrows into river valleys as the Southern Alps close in. An open-air viewing carriage lets you stand outside as the landscape shifts from farmland to gorge to mountain pass. The ride to Arthur's Pass takes roughly four hours, and the sequence of what you see (the gradual climb, the river cutting through rock, the alpine peaks) is the whole point of this leg.
At Arthur's Pass National Park, you swap the train for a modern Mercedes Sprinter and a Cheeky Kiwi guide who knows the local detail. The first stop is the Otira Viaduct, a 440-metre engineering feat stretching across a dramatic alpine gorge. Without it, crossing Arthur's Pass by road would not exist. The views radiate in every direction, and the Kea, New Zealand's alpine parrot, often appears. Then you roll into Arthur's Pass Village for a full hour on your own terms. If you have the legs for it, the walk to Devils Punchbowl Waterfall is a low-to-moderate trail through native bush ending at a 131-metre cascade. If you prefer to stay put, the village café serves coffee and the local shops are worth a wander.
The return journey includes Castle Hill, an open hillside of ancient limestone boulders scattered across the landscape. The site doubled as Narnia in The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and featured in The Lord of the Rings. You walk among the formations at your own pace, watching climbers and boulderers work the rock. Lunch is included during the day. The route reverses by season: October to April you take the train to Arthur's Pass and bus back. May to September you train back to Christchurch. Either way, you arrive back at your Christchurch accommodation in the evening.

Is this one for you?Choose the October to April dates if you want to ride the TranzAlpine to Arthur's Pass and return by bus. Choose May to September if you prefer to train back to Christchurch. Either way, the guided return leg is what turns a train ride into a full-day experience, since most visitors only ride one direction and miss the Otira Viaduct and Castle Hill entirely.
