The experience

The tour starts at the Port of Tauranga and heads north through scenic countryside to Katikati, the self-proclaimed avocado capital of New Zealand. At a working orchard, the grower leads a walk through the trees, explaining the history of the crop, how the trees grow, and what happens seasonally. You taste avocado products (guacamole, ice cream and other treats) before moving on to the next stop.

From there, the route takes you to BeeNZ, a honey producer that also makes candles, chocolates and skincare products. You get a presentation, a factory tour and honey tastings. The itinerary then shifts to Omokoroa, a small seaside village where you eat fish and chips at the Omokoroa Boat Club (Thursday to Sunday) or Alma Eatery (Monday to Wednesday). After lunch, you visit a kiwifruit orchard to learn how the fruit is grown, packed and exported, with a taste of the fruit itself. The final stop is Minden Lookout, a vantage point with panoramic views across the entire Coastal Bay of Plenty: on clear days you can see White Island, an active volcano. The drive back to the Port of Tauranga follows what the operator considers the best beach in the southern hemisphere.

The group stays small, which means you avoid the anonymity of larger tours. Dietary requirements like gluten-free and dairy-free options are accommodated with advance notice. Additional beverages are at your own cost. Everything else (guide, tastings, lunch and dessert on weekends) is included.
