The experience

The tour leaves Christchurch at 7:30 am and follows State Highway 73, the Great Alpine Highway, for four hours through farmland, river valleys and mountain passes to reach Arthur's Pass village in the Southern Alps. Along the way, you stop at a small farming township with a popular bakery and art gallery, then at a scenic alpine lake for morning tea. The road journey gives you time to watch the landscape shift from pastoral countryside to high-altitude terrain as you climb toward the national park.

At Arthur's Pass village, you have time to explore on your own or join an optional guided walk to Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall, where the water cascades down cliffs surrounded by native alpine forest. Short forest tracks are also available if you prefer a gentler pace. After the village, the group stops at Moana Rua (Lake Pearson) for a relaxed lunch beside the water. The return journey includes a guided tour of Castle Hill Boulders, Kura Tawhiti in the local language, a reserve of towering limestone formations nestled in the Southern Alps. Your guide points out the best photography spots, and you have the option to try bouldering, a type of rock climbing popular at the site. A final stop at the Springfield Doughnut, an oversized roadside sculpture from a Simpsons Movie publicity stunt, rounds out the day before the drive back to Christchurch.

The tour includes snacks, lunch, coffee and tea in an air-conditioned vehicle with a live English-speaking guide. If you upgrade to the TranzAlpine Train, you travel by rail from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass instead of by road, soaking in mountain and valley views from the train before joining the rest of the group: all other stops and inclusions stay the same. The train option is subject to availability on your travel dates.

Is this one for you?Choose the TranzAlpine Train upgrade if you want to see the mountain scenery from the rails instead of the road, and if train travel on your travel dates is available. The standard road option gives you four hours to adjust to the altitude and landscape change as you climb the Great Alpine Highway, and it costs less. Pick it if you want to maximize time exploring Arthur's Pass village and the optional Devil's Punchbowl walk.

What is the optional TranzAlpine Train upgrade, and how does it change the day?

The TranzAlpine Train is a one-way scenic rail journey from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass that replaces the four-hour road drive. You board at 7:30 am and travel by rail through mountain and valley scenery before joining the rest of the tour at Arthur's Pass village. What is Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall, and do I have to do the guided walk?

Devil's Punchbowl Waterfall is a dramatic cascade in the valley near Arthur's Pass village, surrounded by rugged cliffs and native alpine forest. The guided walk to reach it is optional. You can instead explore short forest tracks on your own or simply spend time in the village. Your guide leads the walk for those who choose it.

What can I do at Castle Hill Boulders?

Castle Hill Boulders, Kura Tawhiti, is a reserve of towering limestone formations in the Southern Alps. Your guide shows you the best photography spots and explains the geology (the boulders tell the story of a shallow ocean that once covered the area).
