"The mountains don't care if you're tired," our guide said as we pulled out of Christchurch that morning, and he wasn't wrong, but he also wasn't trying to scare us. He meant it as a fact, the kind of thing you learn after years driving the South Island. The Mercedes Sprinter filled up quickly: max 15 of us, which meant actual conversation instead of being herded through a coach. We picked up from central Christchurch and headed south through the Canterbury Plains, and he talked about the earthquake recovery while the landscape flattened out into farmland stretching toward the Southern Alps. It was the kind of commentary that didn't feel rehearsed.
By mid-morning we'd stopped at Fairlie Bakehouse for the included picnic lunch (the steak and cheese meat pie is genuinely famous here, and you can taste why), and then the drive got serious. Lake Tekapo appeared first, that impossible turquoise that photographs never quite capture, and we stopped at the Church of the Good Shepherd, a small stone chapel from 1935 framed by the water and the mountains behind it.
