The Experience

The first thing that hit me was the smell—yeasty and buttery—when we stepped into this old family bakery tucked behind a tram stop in De Pijp. I tried to say “Gouda” like she did and got it completely wrong; she laughed but said I had “the spirit.” We stopped at a butcher who looked like he’d been there forever.
