Step-by-step itinerary

Sunrise or sunset tour in Nagarkot

  • Drive from Kathmandu to Nagarkot
  • Enjoy views of Himalayas and Mount Everest
  • Explore trails and observe butterflies
  • Visit Changunarayan Temple nearby
  • Have breakfast or evening snacks
  • Return drive to Kathmandu

The experience

Nagarkot sits 32 km east of Kathmandu at 2,175 meters, high enough that the drive takes about ninety minutes and climbs through working rice paddies and potato fields. The village itself is small, built on a ridge at the rim of the Kathmandu Valley, and the reason people come here is the view: the Himalayan range spreads across the horizon, and on clear mornings or evenings Mount Everest rises to the northeast. The surrounding scrubland is laced with walking trails and home to butterflies, though the tour centers on the light and the mountains rather than a structured hike.

You choose between sunrise and sunset when you book. A private driver who also serves as your guide picks you up from your Kathmandu hotel before dawn or in the late afternoon, and the return journey follows the same route back to the city. Sunrise tours include breakfast. Sunset tours come with evening tea and snacks. Along the way you'll pass through villages where you can interact with local residents, and to the west stands Changunarayan Temple, an ancient pagoda-style shrine dedicated to Vishnu and a pilgrimage site for Hindu worshippers. The whole outing runs five hours from pickup to drop-off.

The tour doesn't operate during heavy rain, which is most common in July and August. Wear warm layers appropriate to the season, as the altitude and early morning or evening hours mean it's cooler than Kathmandu. You'll get one bottle of water during the drive. Moderate fitness is enough. The experience is built around standing and watching rather than strenuous walking.

Top questions

What are the Himalayan views like from Nagarkot?

Nagarkot overlooks the Kathmandu Valley with views of the full Himalayan range, including Mount Everest to the northeast. The views are most striking at sunrise and sunset, when the light hits the peaks directly. On clear days the visibility extends across the range. Haze or clouds can reduce it.

How long is the drive from Kathmandu to Nagarkot?

The drive is about ninety minutes each way. The road passes through working agricultural land (rice paddies, potato fields and villages) before reaching the ridge where Nagarkot sits.

Do I choose sunrise or sunset when I book?

Yes. You select your preferred option (Sunrise Nagarkot or Sunset Nagarkot) at checkout. Sunrise tours include breakfast. Sunset tours include evening tea and snacks.

What is Changunarayan Temple?

Changunarayan Temple is an ancient, pagoda-style shrine dedicated to Vishnu located to the west of Nagarkot. It's a Hindu pilgrimage site and part of the route between Kathmandu and the ridge.

Will the tour operate if the weather is bad?

The tour may not run during heavy rain, which occurs most often in July and August. You should wear warm, weather-appropriate clothing for the season, as Nagarkot's altitude makes it cooler than Kathmandu.
