Day 1: Arrival and Jungle Tower Night Stay

The experience

You arrive at Sauraha or Bharatpur after a 5–6 hour bus ride from Kathmandu. Staff meet you, transfer you to the resort for lunch and a briefing, then take you on a village walk to learn how the local Tharu people live. By late afternoon you hike about an hour into the forest to reach the jungle tower: a wooden structure powered by solar panels, built at the river's edge in a corridor where animals move regularly. A guide and assistant stay in the tower with you. After sunset you walk the jungle again, then eat a packed dinner inside. If animals pass during the night, the guide wakes you to watch.

Day two starts before dawn. Light breakfast in the tower, then a jungle walk back to the hotel. By mid-morning you're on the Rapti River in a canoe, watching for the two rare crocodile species (the Marsh Mugger and the fish-eating Gharial), and birds. You may see elephants bathing as you return. After lunch, a jeep safari takes you through the park to spot deer, rhinoceros, wild boar, monkeys, leopards, sloth bears and, if you're fortunate, the Royal Bengal Tiger. The evening brings either a Tharu cultural dance or a slide presentation, then dinner at the resort.

On day three you wake at six, have tea and breakfast, and leave for the tourist bus stop by seven for the drive back to Kathmandu. The tour ends with your arrival in the city.
